We are now using a new email spam filter, called a Barracuda 800, to analyze incoming email messages and assign them each a spam score.
Look for new email message headers beginning with "X-Barracuda-"!
Depending on the magnitude of the score, the message can be delivered normally if the score is very low. A message with a slightly higher score will have the Subject: line prefixed with [BULK] and delivered normally. If you are receiveing several messages that can be filtered (ie - messages prefixed with [BULK]) and you wish to filter this email you can follow the instructions on configuring microsoft Outlook 2003 filters, or configuring OpenWebMail filters.
A message with a medium score will be held in quarantine, and you will receive a daily (by default) message describing which messages are being held, and how to access them via a web browser. Messages are held for up to two weeks, then deleted if no action is taken.
Messages with very high spam scores are bounced back to the sender, who will receive a message indicating what happened.
You can adjust these thresholds for your personal email, and add whitelist (always accept)
and blacklist (always reject) addresses, via the Barracuda's web interface. You can also develop your own Bayesian statistics of spam email, to help assigned a spam score tailored to your definition of spam.
While this may not be necessary, these features are available to ensure that you get the email that you want.
You can visit the Barracuda and login using your usual CLID and password, at this URL: https://facteur.louisiana.edu/
Please contact the Helpdesk at x25516 with questions, and be aware that we've had a few glitches making the transition (the infamous "mail loops back to myself" problem), but that the Barracuda now seems to be working well.
